You have the option of using a custom domain name (URL) with your site but first you must if not already done, acquire a domain name and/or add a learning related sub-domain's to it.
Note: Setting up or pointing domain names and sub-domains can be confusing because it's something we don't often do. Consult your system administrator before proceeding if you have one available.
- Obtain a domain name by purchasing and registering a domain name with a domain registrar.
You can purchase and register a domain name from any domain registrar such as Webnames, GoDaddy, 1&1, Yahoo! Domains, or Register.com as examples. For instructions, see the Help on the registrar's website. For more information, see How to Register Your Own Domain Name by Christopher Heng on thesitewizard.com.
For example, if your company is called ACME Company, you might register a domain name called acmecompany.com.
- After registering a domain name, use the registrar's control panel to add a sub-domain for your eLearning site (only if you plan to use a subdomain would this step be required).
See the Help on the registrar's website for instructions on adding a sub-domain. You can call the sub domain "moodle, totara, learning, training" or something similar. Example: learning.acmecompany.com.
- Point the domain name to Lambda's hosting platform by setting a CNAME Record with the information provided by Lambda's Onboarding or Support Teams. It will look similar to companyname.lambdasolutionscloud.net.
- After setting up and pointing your domain to Lambda let us know so we can make the final adjustment on our side so your site will operate under the new URL
A recommendation is to run your site under HTTPS as this helps keep your site secure.
Moodle / Totara are able to only work with one domain name not multiple. To elaborate www.yourorganization.com and yourorganization.com are two different addresses, just like learning.yourorganization.com is as well. Moodle / Totara can only take one URL, either www.yourorganization.com or yourorganization.com. It's important to configure the domain settings properly in order for both of the URL's to land on the same page.
