Introduction
In offering video as learning content, one option is to keep your videos in an external service, and embed them into Moodle pages as required. Vimeo Pro is one of many external services that you can choose to manage and serve your video content.
In the case of Vimeo Pro, you can set this arrangement so that the videos will be ready to view on the Moodle pages they are embedded - your users will not have to login to Vimeo separately.
This how-to will:
- provide pointers to some settings of a Vimeo Pro account; and
- describe the steps for embedding videos residing on a Vimeo account into a moodle site.
Sections/Summary of the Steps
Before getting into the details of using Vimeo Pro with Moodle, please note the following sections/steps.
- Section 1: Privacy and other Vimeo FAQ
- Section 2: Vimeo Pro Settings
- Section 3: Embedding a video into your Moodle site
Section 1: Privacy and other Vimeo FAQ
It is a very good idea to thoroughly review the help and information resources provided on the Vimeo site.
Make sure to check out the Vimeo Pro guidelines: https://vimeo.com/help/pro_guidelines
For a quick review of the range of other issues, capabilities, etc to be aware of, the vimeo FAQ page is very useful: https://vimeo.com/help/faq
Privacy is very important for many users, and it is the responsibility of the account owner to have a thorough understanding of the level of privacy offered by the service and make a conscious choice. In addition to the privacy settings which will be reviewed below, please make note of the Vimeo Privacy Policy: https://vimeo.com/privacy
Section 2: Vimeo Pro Settings
- Vimeo > Me > My Settings
Under my settings, you will find five tabs. Please make sure you look through all of them and adjust your settings consciously.
- Vimeo > Me > My Settings > Videos Tab
This tab is very important. This is where you adjust global settings for all your content.
Each individual video also has separate settings - however, if you have global requirements and preferences for all your content regarding things such as who can watch your videos, where your videos can be embedded, etc., you are able to make these settings here, set them as defaults, and have them apply to all your videos.
- Vimeo > Videos > My videos
Each of your uploaded videos have their own settings as well. With the individual video settings, you can override your global settings described above. In particular, note the tabs for privacy and embed settings.
Under the embed tab for any of your videos, take note of the link on the top right of the video to ‘Get embed code’.
Section 3: Embedding a video into your Moodle site
You are able to embed a video on a Moodle site in many different ways. Most commonly, you will need to offer videos as part of a course’s content. A preferred way to do that is to create a page resource for the content, and embed the video in it. To do that:
- From the vimeo site, copy the embed code from the link on the top right of your video;
- On the moodle site, click to add the page resource under your preferred topic section as usual;
- Click on the button labeled ‘HTML’ will find on the page content text box for the new resource;
- Paste the embed code into the pop-up HTML Source Editor which appears;
(Note: If your site uses https, please take note of this piece of info: http://vimeo.com/help/faq/sharing-videos/embedding-videos#can-i-embed-my-video-on-an-https-domain (you might need to change 'http' to 'https' in the embed code you are pasting)
- Complete the rest of the steps to add your page resource.
